The history of medicine in film

The Moving Image and Sound Collection (MISC) is part of the Wellcome Library, one of the greatest specialist collections on the history of medicine and the medical humanities. The Library houses over 2.5 million items of extraordinary range and diversity, including books, films, archives, manuscripts and artworks from around the world.

This selection of over 200 digitised videos from MISC covers all aspects of 20th century healthcare and medicine. Some of the earliest footage is from Gebel (or Jebel) Moya in the Sudan 1912-13 and shows scenes of everyday life, archaeological digging, communal sports and recreation. Later decades are represented by films featuring innovative medical and surgical techniques, drug treatments, and public health concerns.

The videos are freely available under non-commercial Creative Commons licences.

A technical film (the first part of a series) apparently aimed at the inexperienced anaesthetist. Most of the film looks at the theory of the stages of anaesthesia using Guedel's chart. This is laboriously annotated with animations to illustrate every reflex present in anaesthesia using the inhalation method. There are four stages of anaesthesia the third stage is when surgery can commence (this is in turn subdivided into planes). The fourth stage is respiratory failure and potentially death....

A completely revised and updated version of the 1957 film of the same title. The two earlier versions of this film (1928 and 1957) were both based on Robert Willis' 1847 translation of Harvey's De Motu Cordis for the Sydenham Society. This version is based directly on Harvey's original text, and corrects a number of minor errors and omissions in the earlier versions, as well as incorporating much new historical research. At the University of Padua, Harvey was taught the anatomy of Galen and...

This film is about how accidents in the workplace might occur. In the form of a semi-dramatic reconstruction, narrated by Maurice Denham, we see how a factory worker, Stan Berry, becomes the victim of a serious accident while at work. We arrive at the scene of the accident, an industrial work place with stacks of oil drums at the same time as the ambulance. The following sequences explore how the accident happened and who is to blame. The conclusion is that it is the human factor the...

This black and white, silent film, attempts to show the difference between conditioned and unconditioned responses in animals and humans. It begins by enacting Pavlov's experiments on a dog's salivary mechanism. Gradually we are shown how the unconditioned production of saliva at the sight or smell of food can be conditioned to appear at the sight of a flashing light. We also examine a newborn baby's reflexes of sucking and grabbing and see how they become conditioned as it grows older. Simple...
